The Serenity prayer is one of the most well recognized prayers in the world. It holds an important place in the hearts of many people. When designing this piece I wanted honor that meaning and include flowers and herbs that have long held significance to humanity. From ancient Rome to Medieval Europe, the plants included in this piece have been revered for their medicinal benefits and in some cases are even considered sacred.
Serenity:
Lavender - Revered for centuries for its calming scent.
Bay/Laurel – Symbolizes peace after a long struggle. In ancient times crowns were made from the leaves as a sign of achievement.
Courage:
Thyme - Has symbolized courage for millennia. Roman soldiers added thyme to their bathwater to increase their bravery and strength. Highland Scots brewed a tea from thyme to summon courage. Medieval knights would have sprigs of the herb embroidered on their scarves and tunics to denote courage and increase their bravery.
Wisdom:
Sage - Has a long history of being an important medicinal herb. So much so that it holds a sacred place in cultures around the globe. In fact, its name “Salvia” comes from the Latin “Salvere” meaning to be in good health, cure, or to save.
Other Significant Symbols:
Mullein – In Medieval Europe candles were made from the dried stalks by dipping them in tallow. Also used in medicines for centuries, it was known as a protective herb and represents a Light in the dark and a promise of renewal.
Acanthus Leaves - A common motif in medieval manuscripts and churches, it symbolizes new life.
This piece was painted on Pergamenata paper with egg tempera paint hand ground from Kremer pigments. One of the oldest painting methods in the world, egg tempera is a labor intensive and time consuming technique that involves mixing small batches of pigment with diluted egg yolk. The artist must work quickly because unlike watercolor, the paint can not be re-constituted once it is dry. The paint must be applied in thin, transparent glazes. Each leaf and flower in this piece has 3-4 different glazes of color. Although the technique is difficult, it results in a stunning slightly glossy, luminescent finish.
This listing is for a giclee print of my original piece.
Original artwork measures 12"x16"
***UNLESS OTHERWISE REQUESTED*** All my prints are printed with an extra 1/2" border for easy matting and handling. Leave a note at checkout if you do not want this border.

When it comes to the world of art reproduction not all prints are created equal. You truly do get what you pay for. Here is what you get when you order a print from my shop.
The Company
I do all my printing through a professional print company that specializes in giclee fine art reproductions; in fact it is all they do.
What is a Giclee Print?
Giclee is a special blend of science and art that is perfectly suited for delicate printing jobs where color accuracy and attention to detail are crucial. Prints are usually produced one at a time, as the process is painstakingly slow. Compare this to other printing styles such as lithography, which are mass-produced on high-speed presses.
The inks
The inks are archival grade and fade resistant. The advanced color management technology used in the print process allows for a large color range so that every print has vibrant true-to-life colors. (Sometimes they even look nicer than the originals!) With the proper care your print will stay bright and beautiful for generations.
The Paper
Giclee printers are able to handle thicker papers than traditional printers. This ability opens up a wide variety of lovely papers to choose from such as heavy weight watercolor paper, or even canvas. The paper I have chosen for most of my works is a nice balance of quality and affordability. It is an acid free, archival quality, heavy weight (230 g, 9.5-mil) paper with a smooth matte surface.
***Most of my art is completely customizable. Convo me if you are interested in having a print made on a different type of paper***
